How Often Should You Trim Hedges in Redlands?

A well maintained hedge can add privacy, shape and shade to a property. When trimming is left too long, the hedge can become wide, patchy and difficult to bring back under control.

The right schedule depends on the plant variety, season, growing conditions and the finish you want.

How often do hedges need trimming

Fast growing hedges may need attention every six to twelve weeks during active growth. Slower varieties may only need a few visits each year.

Formal hedges with straight lines usually need more regular work than informal screening plants. A hedge beside a path, driveway or pool may also need closer control for access and safety.

Signs your hedge is ready

Book trimming when new growth begins to hide the shape, branches lean into paths, or the hedge starts blocking windows, signs or driveways.

Other signs include heavy growth on top, thin lower sections, branches rubbing against buildings and dead material inside the hedge.

Why regular trimming helps

Regular light trimming is usually easier on the plant than waiting for a major cut back. It encourages denser growth and helps maintain an even shape.

It also reduces the amount of green waste produced at each visit and makes it easier to keep the hedge within the available space.

Can an overgrown hedge be restored

Many overgrown hedges can be improved, but the result depends on the plant species and how far it has grown beyond the desired size.

Some varieties respond well to staged reduction. Others may not regrow from old bare wood. A site inspection can identify the safest amount to remove at one time.

Best time for hedge trimming

Light maintenance can be completed through much of the year. Heavy reduction may need more careful timing around heat, flowering, wildlife and plant health.

Check dense hedges for active bird nests before work begins. If wildlife is present, delay the affected section until it is safe.
